Players who think poorly actually find ways to eliminate themselves out of tournaments. You tell how good a player is by how he commits his last few chips in. Weak players at the end of the tournament will commit chip suicide and its important you don't become one of these players.
Lets say for example you are a couple tables away from making the money and your two behind the button with a mediocre QJ hand. You are down to just a couple chips and you know your limited on time. Lets say that you actually have not played bad but we know how poker goes sometimes at least a little luck is involved. You played good but just down and out at the moment. You need more chips desperately and you need a decent hand quick. Beggers can't be choosers you want to play this QJ.
What situation are you looking for?
First lets go over what you are not looking for. Don't be looking to get a couple limpers ahead of you so you can get a call and try to get full value out of the hand. This QJ is not the best scenario but its good enough to make something happen with a little luck coming your way.
What you are looking for is to go all in after one single opponent raises in front of you. Ideally you will be playing against an aggressive type of player and everyone else folds in front of him. You are looking to play a player who actually has a big stack and looking to feed on you with just a mediocre or worse hand.
Lets compare these two scenarios: in the fist one lets say very generously you have a 20% chance of winning the pot. With being desperate this opening hand is not bad. With being down to a few chips if you pull this out and then win a small one next time now you are back to a small stack and the tables are turning.
Much better is the scenario where you are only facing one player. Even if you are a underdog to this players lets say 60/40 its way better than having other players in the game. Your main goal is not to go broke a couple chips is better than none. Play the odds and look for this scenario when you are down and out don't try to collect antes you will end up knocked out in a hurry.
This is called piggybacking and even if you just have one single chip you can latch onto someone who has a big stack getting yourself back into the game.
